One person was killed and four sustained serious injuries in a multiple vehicle collision on the N4 toll road towards Malelane.
The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security, And Liaison said three articulated trucks and a sedan were involved in a crash that claimed the life of one truck driver. The department said it was not two vehicles as earlier communicated.
The department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi said the injured were rushed to the nearby hospital for medical attention.
Mmusi said the cause of the crash is not known at this stage and the road will be opened as soon as the emergency personnel and the law enforcement officers finish processing the scene. This includes the removal of the wreckage from the scene.Three of the four seriously injured were occupants in the sedan and the truck driver. The driver of the third truck escaped unharmed. Two of the three trucks caught fire on impact.
Motorists are meanwhile encouraged to be patient and avoid driving in front of the oncoming traffic.
