Five people have been arrested in connection with the murder of Senzo Meyiwa, Police Minister Bheki Cele announced on Monday.

Today marks exactly six years since the former Pirate’s Captain was killed. Mayiwa was killed on 26 October 2014 in Vosloorus at the home of his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo.

Cele said the arrests were made between 08:00 and 10:00 in Kwazulu-Natal, addressing the media today.

“After gathering intelligent sufficient information and evidence, I am happy to announce that there has been a breakthrough in the Senzo Mayiwa’s murder case. The first five suspects have been arrested,” said Cele.

“The police and NPA are confident that we have a watertight case against the five suspects. At this point we cannot reveal further information as investigation are still ongoing and more arrests cannot be ruled out,” added Cele.

The National Police Commissioner General Khehla Sithole, said one of the five suspects is the key suspect of being suspected to have pulled the trigger.

“This particular process is backed up by forensic evidence connecting such suspects to the scene as well as the weapon suspected to have been used. This investigation is continuing, we suspect that there would be more arrests that would be effected as the investigation continues,” said Sithole.

The five suspects were expected to appear at the Boksburg Magistrate Court.

Sithole said charges will be revealed during the court appearance.
