A gender-based violent mother, Nkosiphile Nkambule (25) passed away after her boyfriend allegedly set them alight inside the house in Kwaggafontein, Mpumalanga on Tuesday.
Police says the Nkambule’s boyfriend, Morgan Mashiyane who is also the father of the girl wanted to commit suicide with the victim however, he then ran away when he saw the blazing fire, leaving the mother ad=nd daughter inside the house.
“A preliminary report suggests that the boyfriend wanted to perish with the victims but when he saw the blaze, he became timid and started banging windows begging for help. Neighbors responded swiftly to his call and whereupon after opening the door, he absconded. Nkambule and her daughter were rescued from the burning house and rushed to the hospital. It appeared that her daughter suffered no scratch but was treated for smoke inhalation only, Nkambule sadly succumbed to her injuries on Thursday, 20 August 2020,” said Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brigadier Leonard Hlathi.
Hlathi said an investigation was launched by the police and immediately arrested Mashiyane who was already trying to run away from the area and found him with burn wounds.
“He was first taken to hospital for medical assistance where he was treated and discharged. On Friday 21, Mashiyane made his first appearance at the Mkobola Magistrate’s Court and was remanded in custody pending a formal bail application on 28 August 2020”.
The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma, has strongly condemned this incident and mentioned that such behavior can never be tolerated in our society.
“This is a clear indication that there are men who are stubborn and refusing to heed to the clarion call by all walks of life regarding the pandemic of Gender-Based Violence,” said Zuma.
