In a brief statement, the Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services confirmed that it has received information from law enforcement authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that fugitives of justice, namely Rajesh and Atul Gupta have been arrested.
It said discussions between various law enforcement agencies in the UAE and South Africa on the way forward are currently ongoing.
“The South African government will continue to co-operate with the UAE, said spokesperson Chrispin Phiri.
The Gupta brothers were wanted for across-the-board graft, fraud, and money laundering.
They fled South Africa during an investigation into their alleged looting of billions of rands from state-owned enterprises.
The National Prosecuting Authority applied to the international criminal police organisation to assist with the execution of arrest warrants.
The NPA as well as the SA Revenue Service were on the list of institutions that were captured.
